Types of Students That Attend De Beau Microschool

De Beau Microschool works with a variety of students. Our students range from kindergarten level to twelfth grade. Our high school students are able to participate in dual enrollment just like their public-school counterparts.

The students that we encounter at De Beau Microschool are typically students that have fallen through the cracks in the public-school system. Some of our students have Irlen Syndrome and/or Dyslexia. Bullying is another reason that students come to De Beau Microschool. Several of our students are what we call second-gear students. Their fastest gear is second gear, which means that they were not able to keep up with the rest of the class. Those students are fully capable of learning the skills, they just move at a slower pace. On the other hand, we also have students that were frustrated or even failing because they were bored in public school. The classroom pace was too slow for them. We also encounter students that have ADD (attention deficit disorder) or ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Other students we have worked with include students on the Autism spectrum. Those students are considered high functioning or Asperger syndrome.

Most of those students were not receiving any accommodations or modifications from the public-school. That means that most of the students did not have a 504 or an IEP (Individualized Education Program/Plan) while they were in public-school. A few of our students did have a 504 or an IEP while in public-school. The parents of those students did not feel as though the public-school was following the 504 or IEP fully, and therefore, not helping their students be successful.

In a future post I will explain about types of students we do not accept and why.
