Bayou Rum!
On April 1, 2021, De Beau Microschool opted to have a field trip instead of the normal Easter Party. We traveled to Bayou Rum in Lacassine, Louisiana. We learned about the process of turning sugar cane into rum. That was very interesting! We learned that they utilize sugar cane grown in Louisiana to make all of their rum. Bayou Rum is also an environmentally conscience rum manufacturer. They try to use or recycle every part of the sugar cane and rum.
Bayou Rum has had an impact economically in Southwest Louisiana. Bayou Rum has created jobs and tourism opportunities. In addition to that, Bayou Rum played a significant role in assisting the local area during the global pandemic. Through part of their commitment to recycle all parts of the sugar cane and rum, Bayou Rum began to utilize the "heads" of the rum to make hand sanitizer. During a time when hand sanitizer was difficult to find, Bayou Rum stepped up to the plate to assist the community. In fact, a friend who is a home health nurse couldn't find hand sanitizer anywhere else. She traveled to Lacassine to purchase a large quantity of hand sanitizer for herself and her co-workers. Because of Bayou Rum, she and her co-workers were able to continue to offer the best care possible for the elderly in our community.
We enjoyed learning about the science and chemistry needed to sugar cane into rum and hand sanitizer. It was a science and recent Louisiana History field trip. I dare say, it was one of my favorite field trips to date! If you are ever in the Southwest Louisiana area, I highly suggest you call and set up a tour of the Bayou Rum distillery. While you're there, purchase a few things from the gift shop.
