Types of Students That Do Not Attend De Beau Microschool
In the previous blog post, I discussed the various types of students that attend De Beau Microschool. Though a variety of students with a variety of needs attend De Beau Microschool, there are some students that cannot attend because we are not prepared to meet their needs.
In the previous blog post, we discussed that some students with autism (more aligned with Asperger) attend. However, students with a more moderate to severe form of autism do not attend. Students who are non-verbal or students who run away without responding to being called (clinically known as elopement) also do not attend De Beau Microschool. Some non-verbal autism students display behaviors as a way of communicating frustration, such as hitting or biting. We do not have the training to address those issues in addition to educating those children.
Students with other types of special needs also do not attend De Beau Microschool. Examples of those special needs include students with severe mental or physical disabilities that require a nursing staff, or students that can be physically aggressive.
At this time, we do not have the training or staffing to handle those types of disabilities.
